The launch of Intercultural and Anti Racism Week on Monday 7 April marked the start of a week which the Equality Commission hopes will encourage people throughout Northern Ireland to celebrate diversity and reject racism.

Intercultural and Anti Racism Week is part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008.

A series of events has been organised, including a poetry competition, information sessions, a conference for migrant workers, a new Traveller play by Michael Collins and the launch of a new Internet radio station ‘Homely Planet’.

Bob Collins, Chief Commissioner, Equality Commission for Northern Ireland said:

The Commission is delighted to again be at the forefront of this important week in Northern Ireland’s calendar of events. Many people from around the world have chosen Northern Ireland as the place where they wish to live and establish roots. We are increasingly living in a richly diverse society. We should all seize the opportunity to embrace the wealth of other cultures.”

Mr Collins concluded: “The benefits of living in a multi-cultural society are vast but we must be mindful that racism and racial discrimination still exist today. The Commission is contacted by and provides advice and assistance to those who have experienced the negative effects of the racially motivated actions of others. This type of poison must continue to be challenged; there is no place for racism in any of our lives. Initiatives such as Intercultural and Anti Racism Week provide a positive opportunity for people to join in the events and show their support for the rich mix of cultures within which we all live.”
