Education Minister, Maria Eagle, is calling on groups across Northern to apply for the new round of community relations core funding.

holding handsMore than £1million will be available to groups in 2007/08, with further funding to be announced for the following two years. The funding will be available to voluntary and not-for-profit organisations to operate cross-community projects for young people from age three to 25.

The Minister said:

"This is an important funding boost to help our young people build a shared future. The activities funded by this programme will provide opportunities for them to mix and to develop an awareness and understanding of religious, cultural and political diversity within Northern Ireland's society."

During this current round over 150,000 young people across Northern Ireland have been able to undertake tailored community relations activities in their local communities as a result of this funding. "It is particularly important that the money goes directly to organisations working on the ground with young people. Those groups are in a unique position to show our young people how to respect each other's culture and traditions through innovative, focussed activities."

The Department will not accept application forms which arrive after 3.00pm on Friday 22 September 2006.

Community Relations Core Funding Scheme 2007-2010

The purpose of the Scheme is to support the development of community relations work in Northern Ireland by establishing and addressing the real needs of young people to ensure that they are given every opportunity to prepare for a life in a diverse society.

The Core funding Scheme runs from 1 April 2007 to 31 March 2010. An Advisory Panel, made up of recognised experts in the education, youth, voluntary and community relations sectors has been appointed to advise the Department on the applications.

The Scheme is administered by Community Relations Branch and is aimed at voluntary and non-profit making organisations that can identify how their proposed programme can contribute to the improvement of community relations between young people, in accordance with the Scheme’s objectives.

Due to the zero-based spending review being applied to all budgets in the 2008/09 financial year and beyond, the Department can only guarantee funding for 2007/08. Funding for years 2 and 3 will be provisional until the outcome of the review is known.
