This event will bring together key policy-makers, service providers and researchers to look at the health needs of local men. The seminar will be chaired by Professor Ian Banks, President of the European Men’s Health Forum, and will be addressed by the foremost experts in men’s health from both Ireland and Britain.
The seminar - "Nowhere Man" - will be attended by over 80 delegates including MLAs, senior health service personnel, equality officers, academics and voluntary sector activists. It is being organised by three of Northern Ireland's leading men's work bodies: Men's Action Network, the Young Men's Unit within YouthAction NI and The Men's Project (within Parents Advice Centre).
Delegates at the seminar will hear keynote speakers talk about:
Professor Banks has stated:
Men's health, as an issue, is still in its infancy - although developing well. Unfortunately the aggregation of data remains one of the great curses for workers in this area. Suicide, for instance, is undoubtedly higher in men, but the actual rate depends very much on geography, ethnicity and especially social class. A similar situation arises with almost all medical conditions. The most at risk men remain hidden and yet are everywhere".
This event (supported by funding from the Gender and Sexual Orientation Equality Unit within OFMDFM) seeks to highlight key men's health issues/needs within Northern Ireland, and will identify actions to address these difficulties.
