The Charities Bill has been a long time coming and NICVA and charities in Northern Ireland have been seeking this legislation for over fifteen years. Today Margaret Ritchie, Minister for Social Development, has been able to bring it to a conclusion.
"We are delighted that the Minister intends to have a Charity Commission in place by the end of this year – that will be good for charities in Northern Ireland and will build the confidence of the public. In the past people were worried about bogus charities and were never quite sure about where they could go with concerns. The new Charity Commission will help both the public and charities as they interact with each other.”
Seamus Mc Aleavey went on to say:
I am delighted that the Minister for Social Development has moved with all speed and now that she has had approval in the Assembly for her Bill, she has also placed advertisements for the appointment of five Commissioners including a Chief Commissioner. NICVA and its members in the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland look forward to working with the new Commission when it is formed later in the year.”
