Search is on for Commissioners

The legislation necessary to create a Charity Commission for Northern Ireland passed through its final stage in the Assembly on Monday 30 June. Now the Bill approved the search is on for NI first Charity Commissioners.

Speaking during the debate, Minister for Social Development Margaret Ritchie said that she planned to see the Commission up and running by the end of 2008.

The Minister has certainly moved quickly on the first stage of establishing the Commission as the public appointments process to appoint a Chief Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and three Commissioners is now open.

Each Commissioner will serve a term of no more than five years with a time commitment of 1 -2 days per month. Full details are available to Adobe PDF Icon download.

The Commission will have up to 16 staff members including a Chief Executive.

The Minister has a public commitment to locate at least one body attached to her department outside the greater Belfast area and during the debate on the Bill she confirmed that her officials had been viewing numerous properties throughout Northern Ireland to assess their suitability to house the Charity Commission.

Minister Ritchie said that factors such as value for money and accessability will be taken into account and she hoped to make an announcement on the location of the new Commission in the near future.
