The European Commission has announced funding for media projects of various types under the Media Plus programme. Television, film and other audiovisual projects can apply under one of four categories.

TelevisionApplicants for all Media Plus funding should be established in an EU Member State, a European Free Trade Area country (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) or Bulgaria.

Television broadcasting

The call for proposals is aimed at European companies whose activities contribute to the promotion and the movement of European television programmes produced by independent companies within and outside the Community by encouraging cooperation between broadcasters on one hand and independent European distributors and producers on the other hand.

The support scheme's aim is to encourage independent production companies to produce works (fiction, documentary and animated films) involving no less than two broadcasters, preferably more, who participate or cooperate in several member states and belong to different language zones.

The total amount available in this area is €12 million, of which up to €500,000 may be granted to each applicant. For fictional and animated films, the grant may cover up to 12.5% of costs; for documentary films, 20%.

Projects should last 37 months, or 49 months for series and animations.
Applications must be submitted by 17 February, 16 June and 3 November 2006

European films

The distribution of any recent work of fiction, animation and creative documentaries lasting at least 60 minutes will be supported.

  • Automatic
The aim of the "automatic" support scheme is to encourage and support the wider transnational distribution of recent non national European films by providing funds to operators for further investment in such films based upon their record of generating an audience for European films. The call for proposals also aims to encourage the development of links between the production and distribution sector thus improving the competitive position of non national European films.
  • Selection
The call for proposal is aimed to foster the wider transnational distribution of non-domestic European films and to encourage theatrical distributors in particular to invest in promotion and adequate distribution for non-domestic European films. It also aims to encourage the establishment and consolidation of co-operation networks between European distributors.
European distribution companies which develop, distribute and promote European audiovisual works trans nationally can apply for up to €500,000 of an available €12 million to cover 50% of costs under the selective scheme and 60% under the automatic scheme.

Projects should last twelve months and the film or other audiovisual presentation should start within 18 months of the deadline for applications.

Applications for the selective scheme must be submitted by 1 April, 7 July and 1 December, and by 30 April for the automatic scheme.

European works on video

The call for proposals is aimed at European companies whose activities contribute to the strengthening of the distribution sector for European works on media intended for private use, by encouraging publishers to invest in digital technology and the promotion of non-domestic European works on VHS and DVD.

The amount awarded will depend on the applicant's market performance, but will not exceed €150,000 or 50% of the project’s costs.

Projects should last six months and applications must be submitted by 15 April 2006
