One Web day is Friday 22 September.
One day for One Web
Community NI, the portal for the voluntary and community sectors in Northern Ireland, will mark One Web Day on Friday 22 September with a series of features highlighting the diversity and importance of websites promoting charitable aims in Northern Ireland.
One Web Day was launched to help people all over the world better appreciate their connection with the ubiquitous World Wide Web, the technology which allows for information to be archived and displayed globally across the internet. Events around the world will aim at showing the real work of organisations and individuals in whose lives the web plays an irreplaceable part.
The Community NI website, launched by the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA) last year, is already the sector’s leading resource, but the nature of the sector is such that new sites are constantly evolving and developing. Whilst some organisations have been relatively ill-prepared for the new opportunities the web represents, some groups in Northern Ireland have taken the new technology forward in their operations, either through posting information on the Community NI website or through the development of their own resource.
Said Seamus McAleavey, Chief Executive of NICVA:
“The fact that charities in Northern Ireland are so busy and have such an enormous workload, makes their online presence even more remarkable,” commented Seamus McAleavey, chief executive of the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action (NICVA).
“Government supported sites like MygroupNI.com and Community NI have given charities the opportunity to create special information pages for their own members and get the good news of their hard work out to the public. One Web Day offers a chance to reflect on the contribution of new technology to the modern world.”
