One Web Day, the international celebration of the World Wide Web, will take place this year on Friday 22nd September. The celebration of the now almost globally ubiquitous system will register with technology geeks, but what is its significance for the rest of us?
Making a connection with the Web.
In essence, the web is a global system for the retrieval and publication of information. Text documents, images, multimedia and many other items of information, referred to as resources, are identified by short and unique identifiers so that each can be found, accessed and cross-referenced in the simplest possible way. By knowing those identifiers, or having a way to find them quickly, a browser allows one to make use of the resources. The web straddles the various sections and resources of the otherwise unexciting internet, making those resources, and the ‘net itself, useful.
A necessary resource
The web has become so commonplace and necessary in our society today that, for many it is difficult to conceive of a world before its influence. Before the web, there could never have been a ‘dotcom rush’, the phenomenon which sparked a massive investment bubble in the 1990’s; low cost airlines wouldn’t have stood a chance of prospering, whilst the concept of ecommerce, with its associated Amazon.coms and eBays, would never have existed.
Traffic
Whilst shopping, news and adult entertainment continues to dominate internet data traffic in the West, one of the growing trends in Northern Ireland has been the development of websites to spread news from charitable organisations and the work of volunteers. Sites like www.communityni.org, a news and events site run by charity umbrella organisation NICVA have seen a steady high accumulation of return visitors. They’re drawn to the diversity of information available, the opportunity to find rewarding work within the voluntary and community sector, and the presence of a reliable and authoritative news source.
Our place in One Web Day
Community NI strives to be an embodiment of the principles behind One Web Day; as a site worth visiting, it aims to be a celebration of the work of charities and voluntary organisations across Northern Ireland.
