The growth of civil society is one of the most significant trends in international development according to the World Bank. The term refers to a vast array of non governmental and not for profit organisations that have a presence in public life and express the interests and values of their members or others.
Community groups, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), trade unions, indigenous groups, charities, faith based bodies, professional associations and foundations all engage in civil society activities.
The influence of these organisations in shaping global public policy has emerged over the past two decades. This dynamism is illustrated by successful advocacy campaigns such as the banning of land mines and debt cancellation - which have mobilised thousands of global supporters.
