GOGGINS ANNOUNCES ADDITIONAL FUNDING FOR SPEECH & LANGUAGE THERAPY SERVICES FOR CHILDREN

Children across Northern Ireland are to benefit from an additional £1million for speech & language therapy services.

Health Minister, Paul Goggins said the funds will provide for the recruitment of additional speech & language therapists and assistants to better address communication problems for children with special education needs. The funds will also provide early interventions and treatment for children in a range of settings including special schools.

This additional funding was first announced in March 2006 as part of the Children and Young People's Package

The Minister said: "Speech & language therapy is a vital part of the assessment and treatment for those children with special educational needs.

"The early intervention and treatment teams which are being set up from the Children & Young People Funding Package will make a real difference for children with a learning disability. The addition funding will be targeted at children who need it most through close co-operation between health professionals and school principals.”
