Rayne takes new direction

The Rayne Foundation has today announced major changes in its focus and how it works. All these changes are explained on a brand new website.

The Rayne Foundation announces the results of two years of dramatic change

It has adopted an underlying theme – ‘bridge building’ – backed up by research commissioned from New Philanthropy Capital. The Foundation is strongly concerned about the growth of incomprehension, insularity, intolerance and exclusion and sees the need for inspiring individuals and organisations able to build bridges. The research identifies four ‘bridge building’ outcomes:

  • increased tolerance and understanding amongst people of different backgrounds and beliefs;
  • reduced exclusion and marginalisation;
  • reduced conflict; and
  • unconnected people brought together for the good of society.

The Foundation’s new starting point is to understand and engage with the needs of UK society and, where it believes it can make a difference, work with partners to address these needs. The primary focus is therefore society’s needs.

A new list of Areas of Special Interest has been published. The Foundation will be developing a greater depth of knowledge in these particular areas.

The Foundation has reviewed and amended its six aims; these help it to prioritise projects that are likely to deliver strong ‘bridge building’ outcomes.

Rayne Grants continues as the Foundation’s open application programme. An E Guide for applicants and a two-stage on-line application process have been introduced. This is the only programme which accepts unsolicited applications. (Applicants who have already begun their application using the guidance given on the old website have until the end of May to submit their application.)

Commenting on this new direction, Tim Joss, the Foundation’s Director, said: “This has been a thrilling two years. Early wins with our theme and new tools have encouraged us to pursue this more focused and pro-active approach. We are well positioned to make a measurably stronger impact.”
