NICVA Small Logo

Combat Poverty is the lead public body for promoting research on poverty. As part of its research programme, Combat Poverty annually invites applications for its Poverty Research Initiative from qualified individuals and organisations with a background in social policy research.

Combat Poverty has developed the Poverty Research Initiative to support independent, policy-relevant research, with the twin aims of promoting public understanding of poverty and informing the development of policies to tackle poverty.

Proposals are now invited from qualified individuals and organisations under the following funding strands:

Research Awards
They are provided for new research on poverty undertaken by established researchers in third-level institutions, not-for profit research bodies and non-governmental organisations. The funding provides research resources to gather and analyse data relating to poverty and policy. There are two categories under this strand: Flagship research projects and Specialist research projects.
Closing date for applications:23rd March 2007.

Research Fellowships
They support post-graduate students and individuals in the public sector and non-governmental organisations to undertake individual studies on poverty and policy at third-level institutions. There are three categories under this strand: Visiting research fellowship at the Policy Institute, TCD; PhD fellowship and Civil society research scholarship at UCD.
Closing date for applications: To be confirmed by the Policy Institute.

Research Internships in Combat Poverty
The internships are provided for post-graduates and post-doctoral social research students to contribute to the research programme of Combat Poverty. There are two categories under this strand: Post-graduate and Research internships.
Closing date for applications: 23rd February 2007.

Research Promotion Events
Funding is available for research promotion events at a national or regional level, in order to facilitate the public dissemination of research findings under the Initiative.
Closing date for proposals for promotional events is 2nd March, 2007.

Research themes:
The following research themes have been identified for the 2007 call for proposals. They reflect Combat Poverty objectives and national policy priorities:

  • Poverty among vulnerable groups, especially children and migrants
  • Access to quality services, in particular health and education
  • Transition from welfare to work
  • Problems and solutions for disadvantaged areas
  • New forms of poverty, especially those relating to consumption
  • Redistributive tax and welfare policies

Proposals which utilise the EU Survey on Income and Living Conditions for any of the above themes are especially welcome.

The brochure for the 2007 Call for Proposals is available to download from the website at Combat Poverty - Poverty Research Initiative.

Further information, including details of the individual strands and application forms, will be available shortly at www.combatpoverty.ie/research , by email to research@combatpoverty.ie or by telephone to 00353 1602 6633.

Information workshops relating to the Initiative will take place at various venues in January 2007.
