The annual appeal by Belfast Cathedral expects to have raised £260,000 from the generosity of local people for distribution to several worthy causes.
The Cathedral Newsletter describes how cheques were presented to Women in Fisheries, a support group operating in the County Down fishing villages, and to the Mission to Fishermen which also operates there. The Mission to Seafarers also received support for its work in Belfast, Londonderry, Larne and Warrenpoint continuing on the theme of support for seafarer organisations. The RNLI was also recognised, together with the Jubilee Sailing Trust which takes crews to sea comprising of equal numbers of physically handicapped and able bodied persons. The donation given will enable handicapped persons from the north of Ireland to be assisted to take part.
Before the Nine Lessons on Christmas Eve, a cheque for £23K was presented to Mrs Margaret Boden, the principal organiser of Christian Aid in Ireland. At "The Good Samaritan Service" on the first sunday afternoon in February, cheques were presented to representatives of the various charities and community groups.
