BLF - The Big Labour Fund?

The Guardian Newspaper has reported that five out of twelve of the new Big Lottery Fund (BLF) Board are Labour members. The remaining 7 have no political affiliation.

The five Labour party members on the new Big Lottery Fund include the board's chairman, Sir Clive Booth, who has campaigned for Labour in the last three general elections.

The others are the former deputy leader of Harrow Council, Sanjay Dighe; Roland Doven, who worked with Tony Blair's parliamentary private secretary, Keith Hill; former Warrington Council leader John Gartside; and Albert Tucker, the managing director of a fairtrade company.

Ms Jowell said the members would provide "strong and dynamic leadership". The appointments are causing controversy as the Big Lottery Fund has been accused of breaching the additionality principle of lottery funds and of being too close to government when choosing funding programmes and recipients.

Breidge Gad returns to the Big Lottery Fund and will also chair the Northern Ireland Commitee of Big Lottery Fund once it is established.
