The Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC) has announced a second call for applications for the ‘Maximising Community Space’ programme.

The programme, which is managed by the RDC and funded by the International Fund for Ireland and the EU Peace II Programme, is designed to facilitate the development and wider usage of existing rural halls infrastructure.

The programme has two elements. The first element offers a practical programme of development support to assist groups in a wide range of activities such as project planning, fundraising, financial management, publicity, health and safety and disability awareness. In addition there is a compulsory good relations element designed to support communities in addressing issues of community relations. Groups which successfully complete the initial stage are then eligible to apply for the second element of the programme which offers project grant assistance for minor works to their buildings up to the sum of £40,000.

Projects which could be eligible include small scale extensions or renovation works to accommodate multiple activities; Sub-divisions of premises to allow for multiple usages; alternations to the mechanical & electrical services to allow for efficient use of the premises or general works to meet health and safety standards.

Commenting on the Programme RDC Chair Caroline Breakey said, “RDC is delighted to be able to reopen this programme of support to communities across rural Northern Ireland. The programme recognises the wide range of existing hall infrastructure that is available in rural areas and seeks to make best use of existing facilities in meeting the needs of rural communities. The programme is open to all sectors and communities across rural Northern Ireland which own or manage a rural hall in need of small scale repairs. Whilst there are opportunities for grant aid this is primarily a development support programme and successful applicants will be required to participate in training and mentoring support including a compulsory community relations strand. We have no doubt that the programme will be very competitive with a lot of interest. There are however only 30 places available and the closing date is Wednesday 22 August 2007 at 4pm”.

Information packs and application forms can be obtained from the RDC by telephoning 028 8676 6980, emailing info@rdc.org.uk or visiting its website at www.rdc.org.uk where further details on the programme can be obtained.
