In Northern Ireland 21% of adults living in private households have some degree of disability, however disabled people are under-represented in the volunteering population. Research published recently indicates that only 3% of people volunteering with organisations have a disability (It’s All About Time – Volunteering in Northern Ireland, Volunteer Development Agency 2007).
Working together, Leonard Cheshire Disability and the Volunteer Development Agency aim to increase the number of people with disabilities volunteering and with this in mind have produced two new publications which will be launched on 16 October at NICVA, Belfast and on 21 October at Get Going Disability Resource Centre, Omagh.
‘Tapping into Untapped Resources’ is a guide for organisations on involving people with disabilities as volunteers and ‘Just Go For It’ is a publication encouraging people with disabilities to volunteer.
If you would like to attend either of the two events please RSVP to Joanne by 3 October 2008 on 028 9023 6100 or email joanne@volunteering-ni.org
