Would your community group like to do its bit for the environment? Would you like to reduce the impact your lifestyle has on the environment? Then this event is for you. A Step in the Right Direction for Local Government will highlight the impact our lifestyle has on the environment and the practical steps we can all take individually and/or as a group to reduce our ecological footprint (the impact their lifestyle has on the environment). This Conference will draw on the experience of the Northern Ireland pilot project, the Community Eco-Challenge, which successfully worked with a sample of 100 households (five community groups) to help them live more sustainably and reduce their ecological footprint.
Come along and hear how:
- A unique partnership approach was adopted to deliver on the ground solutions and achieve tangible benefits for everyone involved.
- 100 householders worked towards reducing their ecological footprint.
- The impact of fuel poverty was reduced by helping families save £100's of pounds off their annual energy/heating bills.
- Health issues such as obesity were tackled by encouraging healthier diets.
- Community groups committed to use more sustainable modes of transport and reduced their CO2, saved money and significantly enhanced their health.
- A community group in Newry set up a community eco garden in the Southern area.
- A community group in Craigavon embarked on a cycle scheme to reduce their transport footprint, saving money and boosting their health.
- 100 householders reduced their food miles, packaging and enjoyed a healthier diet through growing their own vegetables at home in recycled tubs.
- 100 householders were challenged to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill and increased their recycling to 100%.
The event takes place in the Armagh City Hotel, on 16 October 2008 from 9.00am to 2.45pm.
There are a limited number of spaces allocated for community organisations at a preferential rate of £20.00 per person (normal price £35). For more information or to book a place please contact Anne Mason on 028 3751 5800 or emaila.mason@sgehc.com .
