Response to Civil Partnership

NICVA's response to the consultation on civil partnership: the legal status of committed same-sex couples in Northern Ireland.

NICVA welcomes this initiative to give same-sex couples the opportunity to be legally recognised as a partnership with the same rights and responsibilities as married opposite-sex couples.

We agree that same-sex couples should be able to register partnership in Northern Ireland and that any dissolution should go through a legal process.

NICVA argues that it would be preferable to give same-sex couples the same adoption and fostering rights as married couples. We also argue that privacy of same-sex couples, who propose to register, would be better served by posting the initials and surnames of all couples, regardless of gender.
