one in tenThe Union of Students in Ireland (USI) launches a new poster campaign this Easter entitled One in Ten, aimed at encouraging students to feel relaxed about their sexuality – and other people’s. People who are gay, lesbian or bisexual make up 10 percent of the student population. In the words of campaign posters soon to be appearing in colleges across Ireland, “one in ten are born that way”.

The posters show a pink chick breaking out of an egg, which symbolises the rite of passage that is ‘coming out’ for gay youth. The message is that diversity is something to be celebrated, not feared.

USI Welfare Officer Tom Lowth said:

Coming to terms with one’s sexuality is a rite of passage for young people but for gay and questioning students that process can be more difficult, especially because of old-fashioned prejudice or its modern equivalent, stereotyping. Diversity is part-and-parcel of creation, so let’s celebrate and respect that not try to deny it. The One in Ten campaign encourages students to feel at ease with their own sexuality and other people’s – whether that be straight, gay or bisexual.
