The young DJs will present features, including news, and tell their audience about the charity’s vital work in giving the world’s most vulnerable children a chance of survival. ‘For the Kids Day’ will also be giving some children the chance to challenge Gordon Brown, David Cameron and Nick Clegg on their commitment to saving the lives of the 10 million children who die each year before their fifth birthday – the focus of Save the Children’s new three-year campaign.
Gordon Brown, recently interviewed by young people from across the UK in connection with For the Kids Day, said:
"When a child is born, there’s nobody in the world that doesn’t want the best for that child. That they could have all the chances and all the opportunities that we, as children, had and our children have. I think we’ve all got a part to play because we can make a difference."
Other celebrities, such as Travis front man Fran Healey, TV personality Paul O’Grady, actress Amanda Mealing, singer-songwriter Amy MacDonald and actor and director David Threlfall, will be making special announcements on ‘For the Kids Day’ to support Save the Children.
‘For the Kids Day’ is a part of Save the Children’s biggest ever global campaign, aiming to stop the huge number of children dying before their fifth birthday. The charity’s new campaign show how this can be achieved with simple solutions – vaccinations, mosquito nets and clean water are just some ways which help keep a child alive and healthy. Ryan and his friends will be explaining just how simple it is for listeners to get involved and make a difference.
Sheri Chamberlain, Save the Children’s Programme Director said:
"This is a great opportunity for local kids to show off their enormous talent while letting their community know how easy it is for them to help save these children.
"10 million children around the world die every year – that’s a coach load of children every 3 minutes – simply because they don’t have enough food or access to basic medicines. We can stop this by raising awareness and encouraging 97.4 Cool FM listeners to help."
Henry Owens, 97.4 Cool FM, Programme Director said:
"It’s fantastic to have young people in the studio with us. It’s sure to create a vibrant atmosphere and a real buzz as well as helping vulnerable children everywhere. Who knows, maybe we’ll also find our future 97.4Cool FM DJs!"
