The Secretary of State, Peter Hain recently announced the establishment of a Children and Young People’s Funding Package (CYPFP) with funding coming on stream in April 2006.

The Department of Education School Improvement Branch has provided some further detail on the Fund, the final details of which are still being worked throug. It is anticipated that in excess of £25m will be allocated in the first year of the fund.

The Extended Schools concept (8am to 6pm) will be at the core of the Children’s and Young People’s Funding package and will provide activities based on their particular circumstances and needs, taken from a ‘menu’ which will include breakfast clubs, after-school study support and after-school youth, sport and leisure activities; programmes for parents and community use of schools.

The focus will be on supporting learning, healthy lifestyles and creativity, with funding being allocated directly to the schools. Alongside this there will be other strands within the package all targeted at children and young people especially those in need.

No decisions have been taken on the individual schools to be included within the extended schools strand. The Department of Education is currently in discussion with colleagues in partner bodies and other Departments on this and other aspects of the policy.

Details of the CYPFP will be published to coincide with the Secretary of State’s announcement when it is made. The Secretary of State is planning to make a formal launch of the package in early March 2006.

The Department of Education will be the lead department for this programme.
