Northern Ireland has one of the highest rates of teenage motherhood in Europe, with 1,700 births a year.
Community Direct launched the Parents Promoting Sexual Health programme to:
It helped parents give their children vital sexual health information and trained 86 people from nine community groups.
Commenting on the programme, Ailish Cullen, Community Direct’s Marketing and Business Development Worker said:
"With teenage pregnancy continuing to rise here, especially in areas of social deprivation and with sexually transmitted infections at an all time high, it is clear to see why parents are becoming increasingly concerned.
"Recent research found young people who were less able to talk to their parents about personal or sexual matters were less likely to use contraception when they first had intercourse.
"After the training, participants felt better equipped to communicate with their children about personal issues and knew the most appropriate response to questions regarding sex."
Congratulating Community Direct on winning a National Training Award, Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey said:
"Community Direct is to be applauded for its ‘Parents Promoting Sexual Health’ programme. Raising awareness of sexual health and encouraging parents to talk to their children about these issues is vital, if we are to reduce the number of teenage pregnancies in Northern Ireland.
This worthwhile initiative deserves its National Training accolade."
