Citizens Advice warns people receiving child benefit to check their bank accounts and report any unusual activity to their banks straight away.

Two computer discs holding the personal details of all families in the UK who claim Child Benefit have gone missing. The discs were sent in the post but never arrived.

Details held on the discs include names, addresses, date of birth, National Insurance number and bank account details.

Government advice

The Government has advised people that there is currently no evidence of fraud or that the details had fallen into the 'wrong hands'. People are also being advised that if they do lose money as a result of the discs going missing, they would be reimbursed.

People should check their bank accounts and report any unusual activity to their banks straight away.

Child Benefit will continue to be paid as normal.

Help available

H M Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has set up a Child Benefit Helpline on 0845 302 1444 for customers who want more details.

The banking industry body Apacs has also published some advice for the public on its website at: www.apacs.org.uk.

In addition, the banks are saying that the information on its own would not be enough to allow someone access to your bank account, as other security information and passwords should be required.

Concerned members of the public may also wish to contact their local CAB details of which are available on www.citizensadvice.co.uk.
