A new support programme called Enterprising Communities is available in the Renewing Communities areas of Belfast until March 2008 to help tackle disadvantage by encouraging enterprising solutions to local community issues.

Funded by the Renewing Communities Action Plan, and administered by Invest Northern Ireland, the Enterprising Communities programme seeks to assist groups and individuals in North, South and East Belfast, Greater Shankill and Rathcoole with pre-enterprise support to explore and develop opportunities to create social enterprises.

Rachel Marshall, Social Economy Belfast Programme Manager said

"The ideas and principles behind the social economy are not new, and there are some excellent examples of where communities have been entrepreneurial to solve their local problems.

However what we offer is a specific programme of support which is tailored to groups and individuals with no previous experience of the social economy in the Renewing Communities areas of North, South and East Belfast, Greater Shankill and Rathcoole".

The new programme will be delivered by the Social Economy Belfast consortium of partners, including:

  • Work West,
  • East Belfast Enterprise,
  • South Belfast Partnership and
  • Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities.
