Final call for volunteering awards

The Mayor’s Award for Volunteering 2008 is making its final call for nominations before the closing date of Friday 21st December 2007.

In partnership with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, South Eastern Education & Library Board, Lisburn Volunteer Centre and Lisburn City Council, the scheme aims to recognise the dedication and hard work of volunteers within the Lisburn City Council area.

All nominations received under the scheme will be invited to attend a gala reception hosted by the Mayor at Lagan Valley Island, 24 April, when the winners will be announced and awards distributed.

Award categories

The award aims to recognise volunteering under four categories:·

  • Young Volunteer of the Year Award – Recognising volunteering among young people under the age of 25.
  • Adult Volunteer of the Year Award – Recognising volunteering among adults over the age of 25.
  • Supporting Group of the Year Award (Large Group) – Recognising groups or organisations currently providing a range of volunteering opportunities. The group must cover a large geographical area in the course of its work.
  • Supporting Group of the Year Award (Small Group) – Recognising groups or organisations currently providing a range of volunteering opportunities. The group must cover a small geographical area and be set up and run by volunteers where there are no paid employees.

People's Choice Award

The 2008 event also brings a new award with it: the People’s Choice Award. The Judging Panel for the event will select nominees for the People’s Choice Award from within the 4 main categories, and citizens throughout the City area will be able to vote on who wins this award.

The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor James Tinsley, is urging people to submit their last minute nominations:

"The Mayor’s Award for Volunteering is an excellent platform for us all to recognise and encourage volunteering within the Lisburn City area. I would encourage anyone who knows of individuals or groups worthy of recognition under this award to submit a nomination form before the fast approaching deadline of Friday 21st December."

Who can apply

Nominations for each of the award categories will be accepted from individuals and community/voluntary and statutory representatives who know individuals or groups worthy of recognition.
