Pauline Coghlan of Newry & Mourne Enterprise Agency, who nominated Media Ireland for the Awards in April 2008 said:

“I’m delighted that Media Ireland have been shortlisted as finalists for such a prestigious award – the first Social Enterprise from Northern Ireland to do so. Media Ireland are passionate about encouraging and promoting active local participation, and I wish to congratulate them on getting this far and wish them luck for the prestigious final awards ceremony on the 18th June in Lindly Hall, Westminster”.

The awards are supported by Edge and the New Statesman and focus on the people and training that drive the social enterprise sector. They recognise excellence in all aspects of social enterprise, including their vital contribution to training and practical learning, they aim to encourage and reward extraordinary vision, ethical business practice and social responsibility. They showcase businesses that offer innovative and sustainable solutions to social problems.

Social enterprises foster the development of innovative business practices including vocational training, enterprise structures, creative revenue solutions and co-operative ownership models.

As well as being visionaries and business leaders, social entrepreneurs are employers. They are educators and mentors who pass on practical skills and social values to their employees. These dynamic enterprises with a social purpose invigorate the economy and challenge the traditional role of companies as profit-driven ventures.
