Eight inspirational Workers' Educational Association (WEA) learners are celebrating have won CCEA Learner of the Year Awards in various curriculum areas at a presentation ceremony in Belfast.

The presentation ceremony ‘Celebrating Achievement’, which was held at CCEA’s headquarters in Belfast, recognised not only the outstanding achievement of the learners but also the commitment of individual teachers and centres to skills development in Northern Ireland.

Three WEA learners were awarded CCEA Essential Skills Learner of the Year Awards. Each of these learners has successfully completed several Essential Skills courses in literacy and numeracy with the WEA.

Five other WEA learners were awarded CCEA Learner of the Year Awards in the Work-related and Lifelong Learning category. These learners have gained qualifications in creative crafts, working in the community, performance skills, drug awareness and employment skills through the WEA.

However, the winning streak didn’t end there the WEA was also awarded the Essential Skills Centre of Excellence Award and WEA tutor Sue Cathcart won the Essential Skills Exceptional Achievement Award for Tutors.

WEA Director Stevie Johnston congratulated each of the learners on their achievements.

"We are absolutely delighted that WEA learners have won these awards. They are all extremely well deserved and are recognition of the excellent learning opportunities provided by the WEA.

"Winning the Essential Skills Centre of Excellence Award and the Exceptional Achievement Award for Tutors is testimony to the excellent work done by WEA development staff and tutors in the Essential Skills programme and the dedication and motivation of our learners."
