Calling all music lovers! It’s summer 2008 and the time is right for you to now start planning for Oxjam, Oxfam’s inspiring and unique DIY music festival with a difference.

For the whole month of October, Oxjam is all about making music, raising money and helping to end poverty. However, as it can take up to 2 months for gigs to be set up, Oxfam Ireland is choosing now as the time to ask bands, DJs, promoters, street buskers, choirs, music teachers and just plain old music fans to organise all kinds of music events and donate the proceeds to Oxfam.

Everyone can play a part, so whatever you’re into – from classical to club nights, folk to funk – get involved now.

There’s no limit to how big or small the events can be – whether you plan to hire a band, arrange a choir or orchestral concert in your school, organise a music evening in your local pub or hold a karaoke night in your back garden, it’ll add up to one huge, Ireland-wide Oxjam festival.

For all the advice you need to get your music event up and running, why not contact Icon of an envelopeoxjam@oxfamireland.org, lo-call 1890 60 60 65 (ROI) or 0845 30 30 337 (NI) or check out www.oxfamireland.org/oxjam to download your toolkit.

To give music fans an early treat, PreNup (the Dublin rock trio made up of singer/guitarist Fiachna Ó Braonáin and drummer Dave Clarke from the Hothouse Flowers and ex-Pogues bassist Cáit O’Riordan) recently played an Oxjam gig in the Sugar club in Dublin.

When asked why they became involved with Oxjam, the band said:

We are delighted and privileged to be involved with Oxjam, to raise awareness and help wipe out the crippling poverty which so many people suffer from so unnecessarily in a world so potentially rich. Let's restore some balance.”

Play it. Sing it. Dance it. Spin it. Music is your voice … Use it.
