Six NI charities have joined forces to create a consortium for pre-tax payroll giving.

At the launch: Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Wallace Browne, and Joyce Savage, chair of NICTSix of NI's well known charities have joined together to create a unique payroll giving initiative.

It will provide employees with the opportunity to give to charity through pre-tax donations, direct from the payroll.

The charities - Age Concern NI, Clic Sargent NI, ChildLine NI, NI Chest, Heart and Stroke Association, RNIB NI and the Ulster Cancer Foundation - have formed a fundraising consortium called Northern Ireland Charities Together (NICT).

More goes to charity

By grouping together it means that when a donation is received, more of it goes direct to the charity, not on administrative charges.

"Our consortium approach offers donors a realistic, easy and cost-effective way of supporting a cross section of local charities," explained Joyce Savage, chair of NICT.

"Until now, this has only been possible through a split donation, resulting in multiple administration charges for each charity."

People in Northern Ireland traditionally donate more to charity than any other region in the UK - and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to do so.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Wallace Browne, officially launched the consortium at Belfast City Hall and wished it success.

Tax free - how it works

With payroll giving, your donation comes direct from your pay before tax is deducted so it will cost you 78p to donate £1 - the taxman pays the rest. The tax advantages are even greater for those on a higher tax rate.
