Save the Children honours Northern Ireland's Women of Achievement.

Women of Achievement (L-R) Clionagh Boyle, Rita Duffy, Nicky Kinnaird and Professor Dorota IwaniecFor the first time, Save the Children in Northern Ireland has hosted a unique Women of Achievement awards ceremony to recognise the success of women from business, the arts, science and the community, working both at home and oversees.

These women have come from, or have a strong association with Northern Ireland, have made a significant contribution in their field and are nationally or internationally renowned.

The Awards were held at the Culloden Hotel and featured the author, journalist and broadcaster Polly Devlin, who was invited to speak as one of many local women of achievement.

Fashion show and auction

The event included an auction of diamonds and original artworks as well a unique fashion show from Michele O'Doherty, featuring pieces from the fabulous Vivienne Westwood autumn collection.

The Winners

Clionagh Boyle - Community Award

The winner of the first Save the Children Women of Achievement Community Award sponsored by Tesco Finest was Clionagh Boyle, Director of the Derry Children's Commission.

Background: Since its inception in 1996, the Derry Children's Commission has been providing a vital service to children, young people and their families. Led by Clionagh over the last two years, the staff of the Derry Children's Commission have consulted with and recorded the views of over 500 children and young people helping them produce their own rights video and information website. They have campaigned on issues of child poverty, the right to play and the right to a child friendly city. Above all the Commission has promoted a culture of respect for children's rights in Derry among the general public.

Professor Dorota Iwaniec - Science Award

Dr Dorota Iwaniec is a Professor of Social Work and Director of the Institute of Child Care Research at Queen's University, Belfast. An acknowledged world expert in the sensitive area of neglected, failure to thrive and emotionally abused children she has created an unrivalled reputation for Queen's and for Northern Ireland in this field.

Nicky Kinnaird - Business Award

Nicky Kinnaird is a successful entrepreneur who has revolutionised the fashion and beauty retail market since launching her first Space.NK, store in 1993 and now has 39 including two here in Belfast.

Rita Duffy - Arts Award

Internationally renowned artist Rita Duffy, has exhibited around the world and has been commissioned for spectacular city art pieces notably in Dublin and Belfast. One of her most celebrated pieces of work is Dreams 2004 Panel of Children's Portraits.
