Fundraising in Northern Ireland gets on Board

Jon Scourse and Colin Lloyd of the Fundraising Standards Board visited Northern Ireland on 19 July 2006 to promote the development of the FSB.

Charities in Northern Ireland are being encouraged to join the Fundraising Standards Board self-regulation scheme.

The Fundraising Standards Board (FSB) is a UK-wide initiative sponsored by the Home Office and Scottish Executive Office and its purpose is to promote excellence in fundraising and provide a robust and accessible complaints procedure for members of the public.

Jon Scourse and Colin Lloyd of the FSB visited Northern Ireland on 18 July to promote the development of the Board. In meetings with NICVA’s Chief Executive, Seamus McAleavey, the Chair of the Northern Ireland Institute of Fundraising (IOF) Committee, Charlotte Trinder and other IOF committee members they outlined the plans for the FSB across the UK and in Northern Ireland.

The FSB has been formed to implement and operate a transparent and open self-regulatory scheme for organisations fundraising from the general public.

The idea of the Fundraising Standards Board came out of the Government’s Strategy Unit report on Charity Law and Regulation, to act as a channel for complaints from the general public and to help make charities more open and transparent.

FSB will arbitrate the public complaints procedure, and are building a high profile for the new scheme. They want to make sure that the Fundraising Standards Board scheme logo comes to represent fundraising best practice, and that members indicate their membership of the scheme to donors on all their fundraising communications.

The Fundraising Standards Board scheme represents a safety net for donors. If you think an organisation is raising money in an inappropriate manner, you now have a clear complaints procedure, beginning with the charity and if you are still dissatisfied then through the Fundraising Standards Board.

The Fundraising Standards Board is keen to invite consultation on the Donors’ Charter from all parties in the fundraising sector.

They will be accepting comments until 1 September 2006.

If you would like to comment please email them at membership@fsboard.org.uk.

The Fundraising Standards Board self-regulatory scheme is open to any not-for-profit organisation that raises funds from the public and suppliers providing fundraising services to the sector. The fee depends upon the amount of voluntary income raised by the charity and range from £30 to £250 for voluntary revenue under £1m and from £300 to £1,800 for organisations generating between £1m and over £50m.

By signing up to the Fundraising Standards Board scheme, you commit:

  • To adhere to the InstituteofFundraising’s Codes of Fundraising Practice and the Donors’Charter(pdf)

  • To use the FSB scheme logo on all your fundraising communications and company literature

  • To promote the Donors’Charter(pdf)

  • To ensure your organisation has a robust complaintsprocedurein place for dealing with fundraising complaints from donors

  • To select a complaints co-ordinator who will be the primary point of contact with the FSB

The Board expects to promote its work in partnership with the fundraising sector in Northern Ireland later in 2006.
