Do you know someone in Northern Ireland who has helped others take part in sport within your community? If so, why not nominate them for the BBC's search for Sports Unsung Hero of 2007?

The search for sport's Unsung Hero, sponsored by Robinsons, is taking place across the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland is one of the designated regions. They are looking for an individual who, on a voluntary basis, makes a difference to sport within the NI region.

In order to qualify for this award the person

  • Must give their time and talents to enable others to participate in the sport in question.
  • This may be in helping an individual, group, team or teams.
  • This sport can be at any level.
  • Must be someone who gains no financial reward for their time and effort.
  • They must be aged 16 years or over as at 1 January 2007.
  • You cannot nominate yourself or any members of your family.
  • The nominee cannot participate in the sporting activity of the club/group they help (they must be a non-playing coach/helper/facilitator).

Bursaries of up to £2,500 are available to winners of each regional award, to help them with their work in sport. The bursaries are intended materially to benefit and further the work each Unsung Hero has been doing to help sport in the community.

Examples of things the bursary might cover are sports equipment, construction/repair of facilities and/or court, pitch or venue hire. It is important to note the bursaries cannot be used for administrative costs, social events, holidays, salaries or hospitality.

Olympic gold medallist Dame Mary Peters is among those supporting this year's initiative.Dame Mary said:

"Those people who give up their time and energy to volunteer in sport deserve every bit of recognition. There are people all over Northern Ireland who help others pursue their goal in sport without any financial reward and do so because they love it. This is a great opportunity for local people to nominate those unsung heroes in their own communities and to acknowledge and pay tribute to those who make a difference. Without their dedication many people would never be able to fulfil their true sporting potential."

The Northern Ireland winners regional Unsung Hero will then be invited to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme on Sunday 9 December 2007 where an overall winner will be announced.
