The strategic report, 'Our findings, Our future' was launched on 13 July 2006, by the Fund's Chief Executive, Dr Astrid Honeyman.
The Fund will focus on three main grant streams: Palliative Care Initiative, Young Refugee and Asylum Seekers and the Partnership Fund.
- Palliative Care Initiative: The Fund will spend up to £10 million on the Palliative Care Initiative over the next five years to promote the scale up of palliative care and its integration into international donor health policies. The Fund’s Palliative Care Initiative was launched in 2001 and works in nine sub- Saharan countries and to date has spent over £2 million.
- Young Refugee and Asylum Seekers - Focus on Potential: The Fund will spend up to £10 million on the Young Refugee and Asylum Seekers programme to raise awareness and highlight the needs and issues of this group of young people. Refugee and Asylum Seekers have been part of the Fund’s thematic criteria since the first grants round in 1999. Awards have been made to a variety of organisations, from large national bodies to smaller local refugee organisations, totalling £7.3 million.
- Partnership Fund: The Fund will allocate up to £5 million to the Partnership Fund to follow up and add leverage to its previous UK and international investments. In the UK, this will be in the areas of mental health, penal affairs and learning disabilities, and internationally in the areas of landmines and explosive remnants of war. The Fund has supported these causes for a number of years and is pleased to continue investing in the significant gains already achieved in these areas.
Dr Astrid Honeyman, Chief Executive of The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, said:
“Our mission remains to maximise the impact of our remaining resources in order to secure irreversible improvements in the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the UK and abroad. We believe that this can be best achieved by focusing our financial support and expertise in palliative care, developing the potential of young refugee and asylum seekers and investing in the Partnership Fund. We are confident that this strategy will ensure that we leave a lasting legacy in the name of Diana, Princess of Wales”.
