The funding is part of the £100 million Children and Young People Fund announced earlier this year by Secretary of State, Peter Hain, and will complement counselling support already available to schools through the Education and Library Boards.
The money will be used to increase access to counselling support for pupils in every post primary school in Northern Ireland.
The Department of Education today invited suitably qualified providers to put forward bids to deliver the service. Schools will be grouped into eight regions and contracts will be awarded in each of the regions or to a region-wide provider.
The tender details are available www.cpdni.gov.uk, and the closing date for tenders is 18 September 2006.
Full details of the new services will be provided to schools following completion of the tender process in the autumn.
