Lisburn’s prestigious Mayor’s Awards for Volunteering has opened for nominations for another exciting year. The Mayor’s Awards for Volunteering invite any individual, community or statutory organisation to nominate someone who they know deserving recognition.

Mayor with Mickey's Ma

Getting the Mayor, Cllr James Tinsley in the volunteering spirit in advance of the forthcoming Mayor's Awards for Volunteering, is Ms Nuala McKeever, aka Mickey's Ma from her popular television programmes.

As the Mayor’s Awards for Volunteering is launched, and with an exciting new category featuring in the 2008 Mayor’s Awards for Volunteering gala evening, the Mayor, Cllr James Tinsley, very much hopes that people in the Lisburn City area will nominate persons who volunteer in the community and voluntary sector.

The Deadline to submit a nomination is 12 NOON Friday 21st December and a nomination pack can be obtained now from Mr Ryan Black, Leisure Services Dept, at Lisburn City Council who is managing the event with the Mayor’s Office.

Who can be nominated?

All nominations must be for persons or organisations who carry out volunteering or community based work, and who the nominee feels deserve recognition for their work.

The categories

The categories up for nominations are:

  • Young Volunteer of the Year Award
This category is for individuals under the age of 25 years.
  • Adult Volunteer of the Year Award
    For individuals over 25 years.
  • Supporting Volunteering of the Year Award (Large Group)
Nominations will be accepted for groups/organisations who work to provide volunteering opportunities and the group must cover a large geographical area in the course of its work.
  • Supporting Volunteering of the Year Award (Small Group)
Nominations for this group must cover a small geographical area and be set up and run by volunteers where there are no paid employees.
  • People’s Choice Award
The 2008 event also brings this new award with it. The Judging Panel for the event will select nominees for the People’s Choice Award, and citizens throughout the City area will be able to vote on who wins this award.

The Mayor said:

"I would really encourage people to get a nomination pack and help to get someone you know who works in the community or voluntary sector to get recognised for their efforts, and maybe end up winning one of the awards. Really how grateful are we when someone gives you a helping hand?

"Very, when you need it and when you need a bit of help that is the time you appreciate what others will do. The people who volunteer their time, whether it’s charity work, supporting communities or working on projects, are givers in the community, and the impact of their efforts on society and on people’s lives can be tremendous.

"Please nominate someone you know deserves recognition."

The new People's Choice Award

The Judging Panel are very excited about the new People’s Choice Award. Cllr Tinsley said:

"It’s good to keep introducing new things, and after careful consideration, the panel felt an award where the people could vote for their favourite, would bring a new dimension to the 2008 event."
