Young people in Ards have the chance to scoop a £500 award by applying now for one of three Blair Mayne Bursaries.

Anyone under the age of 25 who lives in the Ards Borough and who 'aspires to excellence' in one of three categories - sport, academic study or adventure training - can apply for a Bursary as a way to help them to pursue a goal or realise a particular project.

"Ards has countless young people who are working to achieve an ambition, and it can be anything from specialist training in a sport to voluntary work overseas. The only thing any applicant to the Bursary needs to show is that they 'aspire to excellence' in their chosen field and that receiving an award would contribute towards their personal development or be of benefit to others,"

said Councillor Ronnie Ferguson, Chairman of the Blair Mayne Bursary Committee.

"The application process is very straightforward and I would encourage any young person who things they could benefit to fill in a form."

The Bursary was established with excess funds from a public appeal to erect a memorial to Lt Col Blair Mayne DSO, and is intended to reflect his life and achievements by encouraging young people to aspire to excellence.

Further information and application forms can be downloaded here and the closing date for applications is Friday 24th November 2006. Further information is available from Ursula Mezza at Ards Borough Council, Tel: 028 9182 4021, E: ursula.mezza@ards-council.gov.uk
