Castlereagh and North Down have been shortlisted in a competition seeking expressions of interest for Capital Grant funding to assist in building an Olympic standard 50 metre pool.

swimmerSports Minister Maria Eagle said:

Castlereagh and North Down Councils have been selected as potential recipients of a Capital Grant towards the costs of a 50 metre swimming pool project.

The selection panel included representatives from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, the Sports Council for Northern Ireland, the Strategic Investment Board and Department of Finance and Personnel's Central Procurement Division.

Each of the prospective bidders will now be invited to submit a full business case and economic appraisal for further consideration by government."

The Minister went on to say:

The overall objective is to encourage the development of high performance facilities by 2010, two years before the Olympic and Paralympic Games in London commence. In the run up to the Games, government is determined to raise the level of sport in the UK, to get the quality facilities in place and to get people into a range of sports from a very early age.

The Minister added: "Preparations for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are creating a stir across the UK. For Northern Ireland this is an important opportunity to create better sporting facilities which will leave a legacy, both social and economic, for generations to come."

Expressions of Interest were received from Belfast City Council (who submitted two proposals) Castlereagh Borough Council and North Down Borough Council. The purpose of inviting Expressions of Interest is to short list for advancement to the second stage of the competition only those proposals which score highly on the selection criteria.

Details of the second competition for Capital Grant funding for the provision of high performance sports facilities for other Olympic and Paralympic sports in Northern Ireland will be announced shortly.
