Launch of the Code of Good Governance

A senior official from the Department for Social Development will officially launch the Code with Developing Governance Group members explaining how organisations can use the Code to enhance their governance.

There will also be the opportunity to hear the very latest update on the progress of the Charities Bill from Seamus Murray from the Department.

The Code is a key piece of work in developing standards of good governance in the voluntary and community sector. It sets out principles and practices of good governance in an organisation, regardless of size and, as such, organisations will be able to use the Code as a tool to develop good governance. The Code is not intended to be mandatory, but rather, sets out best practice to help and support management committees/boards of any size.

Unlike the National Occupational Standards for trustees and management committee members which was developed as a standard for individual trustees, the Code of Good Governance sets out the principles and practices of good governance in an organisation as a whole.

The Developing Governance Group consulted on the draft Code, which received a positive response from the voluntary and community sector, in Spring of last year. The Group has now secured funding from Lloyds TSB Foundation to publish the Code for distribution to the sector. This will include a pocket size booklet, a poster for committee/board rooms and the mapping of the online diycommitteeguide.org resource to the principles in the Code. This should help committees/boards to use the Code as a tool to develop and/or maintain good governance within their organisations.
