Comic Relief Small Logo

Comic Relief has opened a new grants programme that will specifically focus on funding work to tackle the abuse and mistreatment of older people.

elderly womanBuilding on the success of Comic Relief’s campaign to raise awareness of elder abuse in the UK during Red Nose Day 2005 campaign, the charity is now keen tosupportboth new and existing approaches to preventing or alleviating the effects of elder abuse.

Comic Relief welcomes applications from voluntary and community groups throughout the UK.

Applicants will be required to show that they are:

  • Working to support older people who are experiencing or have experienced abuse and/or working directly with older people to prevent abuse.
  • Committed to robust monitoring mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of their work and the dissemination of the results.
  • Involving older people closely in the design and management of their work.

Comic Relief is likely to support applications working with a diverse range of people, where abuse is happening in different environments and from different perpetrators.

Between 5 and 7% of older people experience abuse, irrespective of age and culturaland social background.

Most abuse (about 60%) happens in people’s own homes though a disproportionate amount (to the numbers of older people living in them) is reported as occurring in care homes.

Abuse also happens in hospitals, sheltered housing and day centres.

Key highlights of the Red Nose Day campaign to raise awareness of elder abuse in the UK include the powerful BBC ONE drama, Dad, starring Richard Briars.
