The Institute of Fundraising ('Institute') has published a new Event Fundraising Code which sets out legal requirements, best practice guidelines and a checklist of issues to consider when planning and running an event.

As a one-stop shop for event fundraising, the Code covers:

  • pre-event planning
  • administration and participation of events
  • on the day
  • post event
  • third party events and identifying ownership
  • cancellation and contingency plans, and
  • legal, tax and VAT issues.

Jenny Edwards, Chair of the Event Fundraising Code Working Party says:

These days event fundraising is more complex than ever and issues such as planning, finance and looking after people, both supporters and volunteers, need to be addressed. This Code is designed to raise the profile of event fundraising, encourage best practice and make it a positive experience for everyone involved.

Megan Pacey, Director of Policy & Campaigns at the Institute of Fundraising, says:

This Code is an important step in providing the sector with better guidance and reminding them about the relevant legislation - all in one place. We hope that, ultimately, it will make event fundraising an easier job for all those involved, from volunteers undertaking event fundraising to support their chosen charities, to event fundraisers employed in larger charities.

The Institute has established 25 Codes of Fundraising Practice, representing the best practice standards set for fundraisers in the UK. Each Code covers a separate fundraising technique and provides not only information on relevant areas of the law but also the best practice that the fundraising sector has set itself to ensure the highest standards.
