About Derry Red Cross Meals on Wheels

The Derry City Red Cross Meals on Wheels service provides meals to vulnerable people who are unable to cook a proper meal for themselves. The service was set up in 1966 by a group of Red Cross volunteers who all give their time free of charge to deliver meals around the whole city of Derry.

They work in partnership with the Western Health & Social Care Trust, and last year delivered 12,000 meals.

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service

About the Queen's Award

The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service celebrates outstanding achievements by groups of volunteers. To date, over 560 voluntary groups have won the Award, including 71 in 2007.

All winners have been nominated by members of the public who have either benefited from their work, or seen the positive effect on their community. The Award is only given to those groups where volunteers are judged to have regularly devoted their time to providing an outstanding level of help to other people.

The voluntary group is one of only 71 organisations to win an Award across the UK this year.

Ed Miliband, Minister for the Third Sector, said:

"Winning a Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is a great achievement. The winning groups have all given so much to enrich the lives of others. But even more than this, the work they do holds our society together by giving everyone the chance to be included in their community. We all benefit from the efforts and social conscience of volunteers across the country. They are a great example to us all."
