Organisations in the voluntary and community sector are urged to sign a letter of support for the asylum application of a Sri Lankan family living in NI.
Voluntary and community organisations are calling on the Home Office to reconsider its decision on the Somasundram family who have applied for asylum in Northern Ireland.
The family has been told by immigration officials to prepare to leave Northern Ireland after their application for asylum was been rejected.
The letter of support calls on the UK government to honour its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and ‘the best interests of the child’ test which must be applied to any decision affecting children.
It states that the family should be allowed to remain on humanitarian grounds and should be granted permission to remain in Northern Ireland where they have lived since 2001, having fled their own country after the murder of their eldest son.
