The Community Relations Council (CRC) is an independent charity and company limited by guarantee, which works to promote peace building, and reconciliation based on the principles of equity, respect for diversity and interdependence.

Summary of main responsibilities
For the purposes of this short term contract, the Policy Development Officer will:

  • contribute towards work developed or initiated by the Policy Development Programme in line with CRC’s strategic plan
  • assist with the organisation of seminars and information events pertaining to the work of the Programme
  • draft responses to relevant consultations and requests for good relations information or guidance
  • monitor good relations issues in regional newspapers, Assembly questions and other reports
  • undertake such other reasonable duties as may, from time to time, be required by the Council.

The following essential criteria will be applied at shortlisting stage:

  • Educated to degree level OR 2 Years relevant experience, in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with public bodies and the voluntary/community sector in Northern Ireland.
  • Awareness of the developing area of good relations and Section 75 of the NI Act 1998.
  1. A comprehensive understanding of the Government’s A Shared Future Policy and Strategic Framework for Good Relations in Northern Ireland.
  2. Experience of establishing and supporting working groups.
  3. Experience of organising consultation processes and drawing up responses to consultation documents.
  4. Experience of handling confidential and sensitive issues.
  5. Demonstrable commitment to community relations principles and practices.
  6. Be able to carry out programme of work with minimal supervision and also able to work as part of a team.
  7. A current and valid driving licence and access to personal transport for business use/or* have access to a form of transport which will permit the applicant to meet the requirements of the post in full (*This relates to any person who has declared to having a disability which debars them from driving).

Desirable Criteria

  • Good keyboard skills and a familiarity of Microsoft Word etc.

Conditions of service

  • Holiday entitlement will be pro rata – based on 22days per annum.
  • Hours of employment are 35 hours per week, exclusive of meal breaks.
  • The Council operates a non-contributory pension scheme for its staff.
  • The post is located in the Council’s offices at 6 Murray Street, Belfast.
  • The Policy Development Officer is expected to be prepared to travel within Northern Ireland and is expected to have a current clean driving licence and access to transport for work purposes.
  • There may be occasions when the post holder will be expected to work unsocial hours, and a system of time in lieu will operate.
