Champion of older people's rights

One in a Million. Ms June Mallon - champion of older people's rights - is nominated by Help the Aged.

June Mallon has been an active volunteer in the Newtownabbey community for the last three decades, beginning with her involvement in Corrymeela and later as a champion for older people through new Mossley Senior Citizen's Group, Community Development Agency, Community Relations Forum, Newtownabbey Senior Citizens Forum and Help the Aged.

June has been resolute in her fight for the rights of older people and has worked on many campaigns, projects and programmes to promote equality and inclusiveness of older adults within the community.

Further, she has insured that older people in Newtownabbey have been engaged through consultation to enable them to have a voice and subsequently access to decision makers.

In addition, June is a busy hands on mother and grandmother. In particular she supports her daughter in caring for her little grandson, who has special needs.

June has many friends in her community and can be relied on to support them in many different capacities such as lifts to hospitals, collects shopping and prescriptions for neighbours, advice and information.

In short she is many things to many people and she treats them all with care and respect.

June's work was recognised in Newtownabbey in 2004 when she was awarded the overall Volunteer of the Year at the Newtownabbey Borough Council Volunteer Accolades.

Newtownabbey Community Voice honoured June in December 2005 when they invited her to open their new premises. They referred to June as "someone every volunteer aspires to be."

'One in a Million' is part of NICVA's celebration of one million monthly page views on our four websites. The sites were launched in April 2005 and have since received 3/4 of a million visits.
