12 Dec: One in a Million.Carleen Doherty from NIMBA nominates Botanic Inns which adopted them as charity of the year.
Botanic Inns (BI) helped to put NIMBA in the public eye - and indeed to highlight the need for it, the work it does and how it makes a difference to little lives.
NIMBA, like all voluntary sector organisations, is operating in a difficult financial climate. There is less money available for non mainstreamed work and competition to access what funding there is, is intense.
Having £100,000 pledged from BI allowed NIMBA to be hopeful about its ability to get through this difficult time. BI's commitment meant that there was scope to continue building on the good foundations laid, and more time and space to focus on accessing other funding to take NIMBA into the future.
This commitment has provided leverage with other funders and since being adopted by BI, we have accessed funding from The Big Lottery, South and East Belfast Health and Social Care Group, and the Southern Health and Social Services Board, as well as through our own fundraising efforts.
While the relationship between NIMBA and BI will change when the period of adoption comes to an end, NIMBA will continue to involve BI staff and customers in events such as abseils, bungee jumps, gala balls and family days.
NIMBA also feels welcome to seek advice and guidance from BI's managing director and marketing staff since such a good relationship has been established.
