Donald W Shriver Jr is President Emeritus of Union Theological College, New York. For many years he has wrestled with critical questions for our times: How to remember and acknowledge an unjust and disturbing past? How do we ensure that the past becomes a platform from which to move to a future where societies are committed to addressing poverty, acknowledging discrimination and working for social justice.

Remembering, in this view, is a critical inter-generational responsibility. Institutions have a civic duty to acknowledge the past and promote a more just and inclusive future.
Dr Shriver will draw on his experiences in the United States after Civil Rights and on his reflections on US-German reconciliation and the challenges of remembering in post apartheid South Africa.
