European Mediation Conference - Belfast, 10-12 April 2008
“Building Relationships and Getting Results”
Almost ten years ago in Belfast, on Good Friday 1998, international Mediators were acknowledged for their contribution to a milestone in the peace process in Ireland.Ten years later, on the anniversary of the Belfast Agreement Mediators from across the world will gather in the city's Waterfront Hall at the launch of the 2nd European Mediation Conference. The three day event aims to attract some 400 Mediators and policy-makers with an overarching goal to advance mediation in the service of social and economic progress in a changing Europe.
Programme content will:
• explore developments in the practice of mediation.
• reflect on the task of building peace for Europe and the world.
• raise awareness of mediation among policy makers, opinion formers, and the general public.
• strengthen relationships in the European mediation field.
The opening day will examine how mediation can be used to build peace, maintain social stability and promote dialogue in divided communities.
Day two will examine the diverse practices of mediators across Europe and on the third there will be a half day training symposium, providing mediators with a choice of further practical professional development opportunities.
Keynote speakers include:
John Paul Lederach , Professor of International Peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame , has written widely on mediation & peace building based on his extensive experience (including in Northern Ireland) in the field as a mediator, negotiator, peace building practitioner, trainer and consultant; Martti Ahtisaari, the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the future status process for Kosovo & President of the Republic of Finland 1994 – 2000; Jan Egeland, Director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs; Machteld Pel, Director of the Netherlands Court-Annexed Mediation Agency; Antonia Potter, expert across a range of humanitarian, development, peace-making and -building issues; Ambassador Herbert Salber, Director of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s Conflict Prevention Centre.
