This course is targeted at managers and staff from community and voluntary organisations who have responsibility for commissioning external evaluation consultants. The course seeks to address some of the common questions, problems and issues encountered. It provides useful guidelines and tips for the commissioners of evaluation to ensure that they get best value and more effectively plan, manage and quality assure the process.Course objectives:

    To increase understanding of the concepts and processes involved in commissioning an external evaluation
  • To enable participants to identify ‘terms of reference’ for their external evaluation
  • To enable participants to select and recruit an appropriate evaluator
  • To clarify roles and responsibilities to ensure the effective management of external evaluation
  • To enable participants to deal with draft reports including criteria to judge the quality of an evaluation report

The course will include tutor input and group discussions as well as individual and group exercises. By the end of the day, participants will have developed draft ‘terms of reference’ for an external evaluation and considered selection criteria for recruiting an evaluator.Participants on this course can receive an ILM (Institute of Leadership &
