The Department for International Development, the British ministry responsible for overseas aid and development education is inviting participation in a seminar on their Development Awareness Fund

The DAF is a Development Education Funding Programme open to not-for-profit organisations or networks which share DFID's commitment to raising awareness and / or understanding of international development issues.

Funding criteria

Activities aimed at promoting public knowledge and understanding of development issues. In particular:

  • Challenges and prospects for development and poverty reduction
    Building long term knowledge and understanding of the major challenges and prospects for development, in particular the poverty reduction agenda.
  • Interdependence and the global consequences of poverty
    Generating understanding of our global interdependence and in particular that failure to reduce global poverty levels will have serious consequences for us all.
  • International efforts to reduce poverty and promote development
    Generating understanding of and support for international efforts to reduce poverty and promote development including the Millennium Development Goals.
  • Promoting recognition of the progress so far made
    And that further progress is affordable, achievable, and most of all vital.
  • The role of individuals in working towards poverty reduction
    Promoting understanding of the role that individuals can play; enabling them to make informed choices with the knowledge of how their actions impact on the world around them.

Applicants have to be based in Northern Ireland

The Centre for Global Education does not administer this fund.

To brief local non-governmental and not-for-profit organisations on the DFID Development Awareness Fund including details of the fund's criteria and how to process an application.

DFID contributes £10,000 to £100,000 per annum towards total project costs. The next deadline is 30 November 2007. Mandatory Concept Notes need to be submitted by the end of September 2007.

Representatives from the Department for International Development will be delivering the briefing. The seminar aims to encourage local eligible organisations to apply to the fund.

Target groups

The seminar is aimed at any organisation with an interest or current involvement in development education or international development issues.

DFID is particularly interested in receiving applications from under-represented sectors - the black and minority ethnic (BME) sector, women's groups and disabled organisations.
