God's world has always been a world of difference. Yet in our fallen world, difference has always been a problem - in families, in communities and amongst peoples and nations.
Ireland has always been an island of difference. Our history is dominated by how we have lived with our differences. Violence, partition and peace walls are as much part of us as agreement and co-operation, and the differences in our society, north and south, are both deepening and growing beyond these historic divisions.
Jesus is good news for a world of difference and division. That's the message of Pentecost. In our journey of faith, Christ leads us from the confusion of Babel to the city in which God dwells. Here diversity is affirmed in the embrace of God's love. Yet, as Christians, we also struggle with difference - in our churches, between races and especially with those whose values and beliefs differ from ours.
